As President of the Edinburgh University Mountaineering Club and Secretary of the Edinburgh JMCS, Donald McIntyre recruited mountaineering instructors at Lord Malcolm's request.

Parish and Slesser were completing their degrees at Edinburgh University. Ma and McIntyre were Ph.D. candidates in Geology at Edinburgh University.

Hsing-Yuan Ma returned to China in 1948, shortly before Beijing was taken by the Communists in January 1949. He became Director of the State Seismological Bureau in Beijing and President of the Geological Society of China.

Odell was the last person to see Mallory and Irvine on the approach to the summit of Everest in 1924 – when I was one year old!

When the photograph was taken at Glenmore, Odell and I, both geologists, were leaving to attend a meeting of the Geological Society of London – I think I was the speaker. I met Odell again in Switzerland (1948) and he visited me at Pomona College, California, in 1956.

Click on Odell letter for the letter Odell wrote to me on 9 August 1986 (when he was 95). Alas, my visit to Edinburgh in 1986 was a short one. I was unable to see Odell again; he died on 21 February 1987, at the age of 96.
